Историография «Нового курса» Франклина Рузвельта (англ. New Deal Historiography) начала формироваться в 1930-е годы[1]; политика администрации президента США стала одной из главных «мишеней» как левой, так и правой критики. Протесты авторов против расизма, империализма, либерализма, власти элиты, бюрократической централизации и самой природы корпоративного капитализма формировал левую критику. Рост влияния федеральной власти в 1930-е годы вызывал критику правых авторов.

В итоге, на протяжении последующих шести десятилетий в историографии Нового курса доминировали две основные перспективы: «за» и «против». Большая часть работ того период являлась «нормативной»: авторы пытались не объяснить, как и почему произошел Новый курс, но выяснить был ли он «хорошим» или «плохим». Так историки Бэзил Раух, Уильям Лейхтенбург, Артур Шлезингер-младший, Фрэнк Фрейдель и Ричард Хофштадтер стремились «укрепить исторические добродетели» Нового курса, подчеркивая не только его широкую общественную поддержку в 1930-е годы, но и его глубокие связи с традицией американских политических реформ. Одновременно, консервативные авторы — такие как Реймонд Моули и Эдгар Робинсон — видели в Рузвельте «социалиста», а в его политике — подрыв американской государственности.
