В нескольких книгах и журнальных статьях он использовал псевдонимы: «преподобный Т. Кларк», «Робин Гудфеллоу», «Томас Даффл» и «капитан Сэмюэл Прайор». Биография

В 1789 году семья Голтов переехала в Гринок, где юный Джон получил образование, а позже написал свои первые эссе для местных журналов.

В 1804 году он приехал в британскую столицу, где с 1809 года изучал право (после нескольких неудачных попыток заняться торговлей). Он много путешествовал (Италия, Турция и другие страны Средиземноморского региона) и, в ходе этих вояжей, подружился с лордом Джорджем Гордоном Байроном, которого он впервые встретил в Гибралтаре и о чём подробно рассказал в своей книге, богатой статистическими сведениями и заметками о торговле[7], «Путешествия по морю и суше в 1808—1811 гг.» («Voyages and travels in the years 1808—11», Лондон, 1812)[5].

В 1814 году Голт женился на Элизабет Тилло, дочери шотландского журналиста и издателя Александра Тилло[англ.] (1759—1825); в этом браке родилось трое сыновей, среди которых канадский государственный деятель, первый министр финансов Канады Александр Тилло Голт[8].

С 1824 по 1829 год Д. Голт жил в Канаде, где стал первым суперинтендантом «Канадской компании[англ.]*», которая была создана для заселения части территории нынешнего Южного Онтарио (тогда известной как Верхняя Канада). Однако после конфликта с губернатором Перегрином Мейтлендом он был отозван в Великобританию (официально: за бесхозяйственность и некомпетентное ведение бухгалтерского учета в «Canada Company»)[9]. Затем, за неуплату за обучение сына, Голт был ненадолго заключен в тюрьму[10] и в 1833 году вернулся обратно в Гринок.

После возвращения из Нового Света в Европу Голт почти полностью зарабатывал на жизнь литературным творчеством, что объясняет поразительный объём его публикаций (см. раздел «Библиография»). Наибольшую известность ему принесли рассказы «Annals of the parish», «Ayrshire legatees» и «Lawrie Todd», в которых с большим мастерством изображены нравы средних и низших кругов шотландского общества[7].

В последние годы жизни Джон Галт перенес множественные инсульты, в результате чего он был физически парализован, стал инвалидом и умер 11 апреля 1839 года в Гриноке.

Полное собрание сочинений Голта было впервые издано в Лондоне в 1868 году.
